Queens Of the Stone Age

"An evening of fellowship & communion" - Live at the Troubadour March 7th 02

DAVE GROHL made a rare live appearance as a drummer last night (8/3/2002) at a one-off showcase for pals QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE in LA's TROUBADOUR.

Billed as 'An Evening of Fellowship and Communion', the event was an opportunity for fans to hear tracks from the band's forthcoming record, 'Songs for the Deaf' on which former Nirvana stickman Grohl drums. Tickets for the 600-capacity show were one of the hottest in LA this week.

Of the new tunes aired 'No One Knows' featured a vaguely Beatlesy John Lennon vocal from frontman Josh Homme, who also added a distinctly Southern rock lead break to the song. 'Dead' reflected the energy and speed of the band's 'Feel Good Hit of the Summer', along with a lead guitar line reminiscent of Jimi Hendrix's 'Purple Haze'. A number of the new songs Queens Of The Stone Age debuted, including 'Hanging Tree', 'Dead' and 'Flow', also featured ex-Screaming Trees singer Mark Lanegan on lead vocals. Queens also worked through tracks from their self-titled and 'Rated R' albums. The performance was also being filmed for a live video to be issued later this year.

Grohl spent much of the night in the steamy club shirtless and wearing protective gloves.

The Breeders' Kim Deal, Amen's Casey Chaos, and former Cult and Guns 'N Roses drummer Matt Sorum were in the audience.

The full set was:

'Monsters in the Parasol'
'Quick And To The Pointless'
'Feel Good Hit Of The Summer'
'No One Knows'
'Avon' '
I Think I Lost My Headache'
'Hanging Tree'
'God'
'Leg of Lamb'
'Dead'
'You Would Know'
'Tension Head'
'Regular John'
'Deaf'
'Flow'
'Mexicola'
'Millionaire'
'Gonna Leave'
'Lost Art Of Keeping A Secret'
